I’m still new to graphics/icon posting etiquette on Dreamwidth, but I noticed the prevalence of dedicated communities for certain types of content, so I made myself my own graphics comm; [community profile] grphxscream. Montage of the sad jester in holyscream’s icon holding a screenshot of a journal layout. Garish rainbow-colored text reads, “Welcome to the world baby grphxscream.dreamwidth.org.”

The first thing I did was obviously restructuring the journal layout with CSS grid and then writing a bunch of extra styling because I simply can’t help myself, lol.

It is a good sign at least that I can still find joy in playing with HTML and CSS like this. For a couple of months, I feared the burnout had completely killed my interest in all things webdev and I might even have to look for work in a new industry. But let’s not ruin the fun with talk of work and illness!

I’ve been trying out “portable” (inline CSS) gimmicky presentation styles for icon sets, like bingos and such. One is a grid styled like a bingo sheet and I thought I’d finished it when I realized that Dreamwidth doesn’t allow position: absolute; for inline styling. I do get why, but now I have to rethink my bingo layout idea.

However, that extra thinking made me realize the old layout doesn’t even work conceptually like I wanted it to, so… silver linings, I guess.

Well this was unexpected… but it seems like over the past week I’ve become addicted to making icons.

Back on Tumblr I was really into GIF making, so I guess icons are just the LJ/DW equivalent of that. Similar to how the limitations of GIFs posed a fun challenge, the tiny 100×100 format adds a layer of difficulty, especially when you’re also trying to keep HiDPI screens in mind. I had to mostly give up in the last part, since making something look crisp when it’s technically blown up by 100% is borderline impossible if you’re not working with pixel art.

Anyways, here are the capital I Icons I’ve made so far:

This was a super fun challenge and a great intro to icon making. I basically got to observe and learn from the other users in the comm for the whole week. It was really inspiring and motivating; I definitely didn’t start with the intention of getting a full rainbow, but, well…

That voice inside your head that says, “Hey, you should write an AO3 skin that fully replaces the default. It will be fun :D”?

Yeah, that’s the devil talking.

Screenshot of an AO3 user dashboard with a custom skin applied to it. It has is a dark, low contrast, modern flat design theme with a handful of playful design elements.

I don’t want to know how long I spent on this, even excluding the year-long break where I gave up after realizing I couldn’t use flexbox, grid, or calc. The only reason why I decided to finish it this week was because I forgot that was the case and then I was too stubborn to stop.

Oh, and you bet it’s responsive. Well, responsive in the way that AO3 allows you two breakpoints and no custom media-queries.

Screenshot of a mobile view next to the three skin components. The dates on the skins show that the breakpoint skins are form October 2023 while the original skin was created in April 2022.

It needs a bit more tweaking in some places, but for the sake of my own sanity I want to say that version 1.0 of this skin is finished now.
