Here In My Garage: Making An OC Resin Kit (Part 1)

Originally posted on my MFC account.

Attempting To Make My Own Resin Kit, Part I(?)

Here in my garage, just bought this new Miku figure here. It’s fun to display up here on the MyFigureCollection website… but you know what I like more than prepainted things? Garage kits. In fact, I’m a lot more proud of these seven new hard drives that I had to get installed to hold two thousand new male figure ideas that I came up with. It’s like your sensei says, “The more you wait for figure companies to give you exactly what you want, the more likely you are to learn to make garage kits because they’re not gonna do that.”

God, that was so stupid… Well, on to the actual post:

Having finished a whopping two garage kits and one figure custom (and some OOAK Monster High dolls a couple of years ago but who’s counting) I obviously and very reasonably decided to try my hand a sculpting my own figure, garage kit style. I felt very lost at the beginning but because I’m a very anxious person, I didn’t feel comfortable reaching out to others in the hobby for pointers, so I’m writing this both to keep myself motivated and to leave a record that people in the same predicament might come across when searching the web for keywords.

One thing that really helped me wrap my head around the stages of figure design and made the task much more approachable was the book How To Build Garage Kit Vol. 1 by Model Kingdom (模型の王国). Sadly, I wasn’t able to find a digital release that wasn’t boxed-in by annoying DRM and the pages are static images (scans?) of the physical book’s layout, so no text search or modern EPUB layout features. Made translation very convoluted but thankfully the pictures are already very useful for understanding.

<details>

View More Resources

Here are some of the resources I found helpful—or in one case would have found helpful if I had seen it before I was done lol—to get myself started and figure out what to do:

</details>

How To Build Garage Kit focuses on real-life sculpting, but after some procrastination careful deliberation I decided to go digital to give myself more room for failure without using up materials while modeling. (I also live in a one room apartment, so every physical project makes half of it unusable and all if it unhealthy to be in for as long as I’m working on it. 💀) I have a small bit of experience doing box modeling in Blender and Cinema 4D, so I skipped the donut phase and just gave myself a refresher crash course on optimal topology for stylized characters.

I also watched many character modeling and sculpting time lapses to get an idea of how to structure my workflow and studied the part separation and keying of 3D printed and cast kits. Nowadays the common workflow for character creation seems to start with sculpting (followed by optional retopology for animation and stuff), but I find digital sculpting really unintuitive and went with good old box modeling for my base instead.

comments

Needy Fandom Trees

Happy New Year!

I’ve been so detached and out of it that I totally forgot to even mention that I signed up for an exchange, so this is me remedying that now. There are still some giftless trees at fandomtrees, so if you would like to help out you can find the spreadsheet of trees here. The goal is for everyone to have at least two gifts and gifting lasts until January 8, with the reveals being on January 10 (or once everyone has two gifts).

Oh, and here’s my tree: https://fandomtrees.dreamwidth.org/216620.html No idea what happened with the formatting there, but it gives it room to breathe, don’t you think? lol

comments

3Deprecember

Deprecember

It’s been a while since my last entry, and I’ve been slacking on my icons, almost forgetting some community voting deadlines, oof. I’d like to say that it was just caused by me trying very hard to come up with another awful title pun, but it’s actually my personal life that tripped me up.

( Woe is me )

Well, no use crying over spilled milk, even if said milk was poured directly onto me under dubious cicumstances. On to the fun stuff!

3D Extravaganza

Another thing that has made me cry many times before is this little software called Blender.

Last month I got it in my head that I needed to create my own garage kit(s) because there is a severe lack of male kits and especially ones that tick my boxes. I drew up a concept for a Ramsay Bolton bunny figure, but to warm up I wanted to try a simpler original design first.

( Hoe is me )

comments

Naima (Unofficial Garage Kit)

Almost immediately after finishing work on my first garage kit, the red bunny, and vowing to never touch an airbrush again and sell all my untouched kits to save them from my incompetence, I began work on another kit. (I’m in an on-off-relationship with almost all my crafting hobbies, so this is normal.)

(Ga)Rage Kit (or: How I Got My Ass Kicked by a Red Bunny Man)

Originally posted on my MFC account.

	(Ga)Rage Kit

How I Got My Ass Kicked by a Red Bunny Man

After putting it off for more than a year, I finally bit the bullet and started work on Mogami and Kinako’s red bunny at the end of September.

As of writing this, there are three color-coded bunnies in Kinako’s OC lineup: Kuro, Shiro, and Aka. Aka is my favorite, so I’m glad I was able to snag his kit on Migami’s Booth. He has a lithe, masculine physique, and I’m always here for that being paired with a cocky pose. He looks like he regularly gets in trouble for starting shit with patrons but is somehow still popular with them. And character design-wise, you can never go wrong with an eye-obscuring fringe and shark teeth (ooh ha ha).

I’m actually not the biggest fan of bunny figures in general because I prefer elaborate outfits, but less clothing does mean fewer pieces to work on, fewer colors to work with, and fewer textures to try to imitate. In short, a good pick for baby’s first garage kit.

comments

Figure Review: The curious case of Platonica & Luminoustar

Originally posted on my MFC account.

Two or three photos in this post are horrifically grainy because I messed up the ISO settings on my camera while unboxing. I apologize in advance to your eyes.

Back in 2022, if you were interested in the Chinese scale figure market or non-ero OC figures, you might have come across the prototypes for a set of 1/7 scale figures by then brand-new manufacturer Fluo: Platonica and Luminoustar.

(To skip my rambling and get to the review keep scrolling until you see photos. TL;DR rating is way down at the end.)

comments

delayed gratification (clinical)

Sometimes I get myself overwhelmed by the most nonsensical things. For some reason, my brain will file certain enjoyable activities under responsibilities it needs to fear and avoid, which is also why I will sometimes drop off the face of the earth for friends, family, and the various online communities I haunt. Last year wasn’t a good one for me mental health wise and a lot of nice things fell under the radar, but life is slowly improving and I’m trying to pick up where I left off.

That brings me to Honey, Honey by slimeaudit.

This fic has been in my backlog for months because I wanted to be able to… feel joy again, I guess, before I read it. Yesterday, I decided, was the day and goddamn I feel like reading it last December would have cured my depression instantly. Okay, maybe that’s a bit much, but oh my god, does it hit the spot. Honey/Molina is honestly the luckiest rarepair ship I’ve ever had because while we only have a few fics I’m blessed by the density of in-character, well-written stories that also match a ton of my headcanons/personal fanon. How amazing is that?

I ended up spamming a bunch of half-coherent comments under Honey, Honey that I hope won’t bother the author and I’m honestly frustrated with myself for depriving myself of it for almost a year. Although, if I’m realistic I really wasn’t in the right headspace to truly enjoy it like I do now and part of the frustration comes from not having been able to express my appreciation to the author when they posted their fics—oh yeah, plural. I don’t even know if they’re still around or interested in the ship.

The sucky part about tiny fandoms is that great stuff flies under the radar and doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Well now I’ve made myself sad, lol. Anyways, you shoud read slimeaudit’s Wolf fics, because they are very good and will not make you sad.

comments

making ebook covers for fun

I was at a social event last the weekend (everybody please clap) and caught a cold I’m still recovering from, so this’ll be short.

I really love Project Gutenberg and will occasionally browse one if its categories and download whatever seems interesting (ebook of the Epic of Gilgamesh in the original cuneiform, anyone?). Quite a few Gutenberg ebooks come with default covers that can only be described as… visually confounding.

The clashing color combinations and oddly squished-looking font are particularly fascinating to me. But I like that they have covers at all. Anyways, being the visual creature that I am, I like to make time to create my own covers for these books. Here are a few of them:

comments

Iwan to use another bad pun for a title, so don’t Rheon my parade

I have two basic rules for posting images online:

 One:
Downscale to biggest displayed size x2 to accommodate HiDPI screens.

 Two:
No image gets published without proper alt text.

The only times I’ll budge on these are when platform restrictions apply, like MFC’s BB code not allowing alt text or Dreamwidth not serving 200px icons for HiDPI screens. But while I love image editing, writing image descriptions of any kind or length has always felt like pulling teeth. As a result, I have a bunch of graphics-based posts sitting in my files simply because I’m often too lazy to start/get overwhelmed while writing their resprective alt texts and IDs.

All that preamble is to say: This is one of those posts, so it’s more than a year out of date.

And what exactly is “this”? I’m still not sure what to call it but on my computer the related files are saved in a folder called “IRR”—Iwan Rheon Retrospective.
There’s a joke in there to be made about how the German word “irr(e)” means crazy…

At some point in 2022 I realized that through my regular rewatches of the Ramsay Bolton themed Game of Thrones supercut I’d made (I literally had the video files on my phone to bring with me everywhere) I had managed to acquire an almost Pavlovian reflex of happiness to the actor portraying him. I’ve never really been a fan of an actor before—the closest I ever came was making viewing/listening decisions based on voice actor casting—so since this was new ground I thought it would be fun to go through Iwan Rheon’s IMDB page and watch as much of it as possible.

comments

I slipped this guy into the Rainbow Pass-It-On with one hour left to spare on the timer (and a visitor due any minute), which means I hit the 16 icon limit. Yay for spam! 🙌🏽

FYI, number 15 was an icon of Xie Xing, the 10k Escape Plans gyaru leopard, so I even managed to do an icon related to figure collecting.

	Yay for organized hoarding! 🙌🏽

Thing is though… I have to make a confession. A confession of stolen valor, because I… am not a Dragonball fan.

In fact, I have never seen a single episode or read a single chapter. My knowledge of this seminal multimedia work is entirely based on pop culture osmosis.

I am a fraud. A swindler. A disgrace.

In all seriousness though, I always feel awkward about making pop culture references I’m not directly familiar with, but the pull of a bad joke just waiting to be made is simply too strong for me to resist. I was so mad when I googled “goku super saiyajin” and saw he already had a Bunsen burner form—turns out this dude has more power up levels than a Winx Club fairy, my god—meaning I didn’t have to/wouldn’t get to give him a shitty bucket fill dye job anymore.

I kind of wish I’d deep-fried Goku a bit more; looking at him with fresh eyes makes me think he does not have enough sharpening artefacts.

comments

Uhh ya I totally know how to Dreamwidth

I’m still new to graphics/icon posting etiquette on Dreamwidth, but I noticed the prevalence of dedicated communities for certain types of content, so I made myself my own graphics comm; grphxscream.

The first thing I did was obviously restructuring the journal layout with CSS grid and then writing a bunch of extra styling because I simply can’t help myself, lol.

It is a good sign at least that I can still find joy in playing with HTML and CSS like this. For a couple of months, I feared the burnout had completely killed my interest in all things webdev and I might even have to look for work in a new industry. But let’s not ruin the fun with talk of work and illness!

I’ve been trying out “portable” (inline CSS) gimmicky presentation styles for icon sets, like bingos and such. One is a grid styled like a bingo sheet and I thought I’d finished it when I realized that Dreamwidth doesn’t allow
position: absolute;
for inline styling. I do get why, but now I have to rethink my bingo layout idea.

However, that extra thinking made me realize the old layout doesn’t even work conceptually like I wanted it to, so… silver linings, I guess.

comments

icon’t get enough

Well this was unexpected… but it seems like over the past week I’ve become addicted to making icons.

Back on Tumblr I was really into GIF making, so I guess icons are just the LJ/DW equivalent of that. Similar to how the limitations of GIFs posed a fun challenge, the tiny 100×100 format adds a layer of difficulty, especially when you’re also trying to keep HiDPI screens in mind. I had to mostly give up in the last part, since making something look crisp when it’s technically blown up by 100% is borderline impossible if you’re not working with pixel art.

Anyways, here are the capital I Icons I’ve made so far:

☙ Rainbow Pass-it-On on iconthat

This was a super fun challenge and a great intro to icon making. I basically got to observe and learn from the other users in the comm for the whole week. It was really inspiring and motivating; I definitely didn’t start with the intention of getting a full rainbow, but, well…

Sensei, I Like Your Game So Much (SenSuki impressions)

Originally posted on my MFC account.

Last week I finished the main story of Sensei! I Like You So Much!, or SenSuki, an Early Access business sim/visual novel about shipping fandom otaku. HowLongToBeat says the game’s story mode is 15 hours long, but it took me 34 because I spent a lot of time on optional minigames and itabeya decorating.

Whenever I acquire a new obsession, I look for blogposts about it, but with new and niche stuff, there’s often not a lot to read. I couldn’t find a lot of talk about the game online, so I want to add my two cents with this little—or not so little—ramble here, since it’s (at least tangentially) related to my interest in figure collecting and oshikatsu.

I’d seen mentions of this game pop up in some of my online hangouts and eventually decided to give it a try despite its Early Access state and the fact that I’m not really a fan of visual novels or business sims. I was mainly curious to see how it would tackle some of my Greatest Passions™, fandom and shipping, and the discount during the Steam Storyteller sale sealed the deal.

Almost 70 hours later, my main takeaway is that the developers’ passion for the subject matter clearly shines through. It very much felt like a game made by a peer rather than an outside observer, and I appreciate the unabashed sincerity throughout.

comments

Bastard: A Ramsay Bolton Fanmix

Another fanmix! Making these is addicting, man. This one’s dedicated to my favorite fictional bastard, Ramsay Bolton. It touches on his origins, his identity as a bastard, what he wants, and his, uh, peculiar way of interacting with others.

I stuck to my own music library for this, so there are quite a few instrumental tracks. Two of these songs are in German, one is in Latin; I’ll be linking English translations for them.

I had way too much fun making that cover in Blender, too. :'D

Feel Something Different: A Honey/Molina Fanmix

I’ve had Honey/Molina on the brain recently, so I thought I’d try my hand at a fanmix. I’ve never done this before, but I hope you enjoy, haha. This isn’t so much a coherent narrative taking place in one universe, but a series of relationship snapshots arranged in somewhat chronological order.

Sorry for the basic-ass song choices, but I decided to stick to my own library and most of that didn’t really fit the ~vibe~ lol.

A bit of wolfposting again

It’s been a year since my last Wolf post on here. Work has kept me very busy and stressed, but I’ve been on sick leave for a while with instructions to relax, and so fandom talk it is.

I’m still really into Honey/Molina and it’s given me a big creative boost and motivation to post stuff. I made myself a little icon to go along with the theme on here, too:

The fandom is still pretty small, but I get huge kick out of every time someone interacts with my Wolf content, because it means there’s still other people who care about the show and that makes me super happy to know. Things move so quickly these days.

Speaking of active fandom, there’s a new fanfic on AO3 too, Back Into The Fold by Bellatrix_Wannabe_89. It’s only one chapter so far but I’m already obsessed any hyped to see where it’ll go.

I actually recently published my first 10k word long fanfiction and while it was a struggle to get that far and I’m not super fond of the end result, I’m still proud I finished it at all. The scenes and pacing I had planned would have probably needed 30k to flow properly, but I gave up on that when writing started to feel too much like homework and cut the fat where I could. I think I’m just not built for long form writing like this, haha.

Rubber Band (10508 words) by escherfall
( Toggle metadata )

I also wrote two other short Honey/Molina things, one last year and one right after publishing Rubber Band. They’re on AO3, too:

to mark the surface; just pierce (1345 words) by escherfall
( Toggle metadata )

Method Acting (962 words) by escherfall
( Toggle metadata )

And then today I posted my first fanmix. I’d never made one before and it’s quite the fun project. I deliberately didn’t seek out new music and chose songs from my personal library. I’ve posted it on AO3 and here on DW as well.

comments

My first prize figure custom: Ramsay Bolton

Hiya 👋🏽 I finished customizing my first figure a couple of weeks ago and wanted to document a few of my thoughts here.

AO3 reskin from hell

That voice inside your head that says, “Hey, you should write an AO3 skin that fully replaces the default. It will be fun :D”?

Yeah, that’s the devil talking.

I don’t want to know how long I spent on this, even excluding the year-long break where I gave up after realizing I couldn’t use flexbox, grid, or calc. The only reason why I decided to finish it this week was because I forgot that was the case and then I was too stubborn to stop.
( Screenshots )

Oh, and you bet it’s responsive. Well, responsive in the way that AO3 allows you two breakpoints and no custom media-queries.

It needs a bit more tweaking in some places, but for the sake of my own sanity I want to say that version 1.0 of this skin is finished now.

comments

Writing Goes

Back in March, I wrote a post about having trouble writing fanfic, but slowly getting used to it. I’m still chipping away at the fics I was talking about, which are all just about 1k words short (or less). However, this week I also finished my third fic for BBC’s Wolf! The first one I finished at the start of August, and the second two weeks ago. They’re all very short, only around 1 to 2k words each, but I’m still shocked I managed to finalize any of them. It’s probably a testament to how much I like the Honey/Molina dynamic.

They’re not exactly great works of literature, but I am proud of myself for drafting, revising, and wrapping them up in 6 weeks. I haven’t been able to put that many words of fiction to paper since… man, since at least a decade ago.

Sweet Tooth (2137 words) by escherfall
( Toggle metadata )

Garbage Disposal (1173 words) by escherfall
( Toggle metadata )

Passenger’s Seat (2132 words) by escherfall
( Toggle metadata )

I have one more idea that might make a fun short for me to write, as well as one that would actually require me to do some in-depth plotting, which would be an interesting challenge as I haven’t done that in years.

I do need to focus on some life stuff for now, so those will have to wait. I’m also feeling a bit self-conscious about simultaneously clogging up #bbc wolf on Tumblr with my GIFs and taking up 75% of the AO3 tag with my fics, so that’d hit two birds with one stone.

Oh, and lest I forget: You would not believe how hyped I was when I saw that someone else had posted a ficlet for Wolf. I enjoyed The Monster In My Bed so much I went back and did another couple of revisions for Garbage Disposal that I think it really benefited from. So please, do check out TMIMB by colisahotnorthernmess on AO3.

The Monster In My Bed (574 words) by colisahotnorthernmess
( Toggle metadata )

comments

Writing Woes

It must have been a year or so ago that I finally managed to break through the wall that kept me from being able to write fanfic. Until then, the only work I felt capable of was original stories. Now, I of course don’t think original stories are worse that fanfic, but it was frustrating to not be able to use my favorites as dolls in my mind, much less in visual art or writing.

I still haven’t finished a single non-comedic fic.

My aversion to percieved OOCness trips me up every paragraph and I can’t get through revisions, because those require looking at my own writing. Gah!

comments

a fresh start

A few days ago, I received an email about my remaining LiveJournal account’s anniversary. I never actually posted anything on there, just used it to join communities and comment, but the email did give me the idea of trying out Dreamwidth. I don’t know anyone one here, but I’ve always felt that joining a social media site is actually the most fun when no one there knows you exist.

It’s the joy of having no eyes on you and being able to be totally cringe and free. I would switch from service to service, as I wasn’t old enough to pay for hosting my own website yet, enjoying the freedom until I’d eventually end up with a few regular readers and suddenly feel the pressure to perform a more presentable version of myself.

I had my mainstay socials of course. Animexx and DeviantArt had features I enjoyed, and more importantly, were where all the artists I liked were, and I did make some nice acquaintances on there and enjoyed the culture and community. Then there was Tumblr, where I got my fandom and theming fix, but never interacted besides talking in the tags (my favorite part of Tumblr culture to this day).

I recently stared posting on Tumblr, and I can feel the pressure building up again. Now I am here and looking forward to enjoying some peace and quiet. I’m feeling nostalgic already, just looking at the interface of the post editor, and let me tell you, any website where you can disable comments is a friend of mine, hahaha.

Thanks for reading, and for not reading, too. ☆⌒(ゝ。∂)

comments
